Meta's creative diversity score: why your 20 ads may count as three.

In late August a new column appeared in Ads Manager: Creative diversity, rated Low, Medium or High for each ad set and marked as estimated and in development. It's Meta telling you how many distinct ads it thinks you run, and the answer is often lower than your ad count. A Low rating is fixable without pausing the ads that pay.

Picture an ad set with 14 ads. The hero product on white. The same shot cropped square. The same shot again with a red price badge. Four headline variants on that image. One lifestyle photo. Six UGC clips from one creator, filmed in the same kitchen on the same afternoon.

You see 14 ads. Meta's delivery system may see three. Since late August 2026 it will tell you so, in a column you have to switch on yourself.

01 What is Meta's creative diversity score?

Creative diversity is a column in Meta Ads Manager that rates each ad set Low, Medium or High on how visually different its images and videos are from one another. Meta labels it estimated and in development. To add it, open Columns, choose Customize columns and search for Creative diversity. Advertisers first spotted it in late August 2026.

Meta has a help center page for the metric but made no launch announcement, so most of what's known comes from advertisers poking at it. The early consensus is that the score reads visuals. Rewriting a headline or swapping the CTA on the same image doesn't move it. Several advertisers report ad sets that mix statics, video hooks, UGC and carousels still rating Low. Mixing formats, in other words, isn't enough on its own.

02 Why Meta groups look-alike ads

Meta's ad system groups ads that share their main visual and thematic traits and treats them as variations of one creative, with learning and delivery shared across the group. Meta said so in a December 2025 post on creative diversification. In practice, ten near-identical ads behave like one ad with ten names.

The grouping matters because of Andromeda, the retrieval engine Meta described in December 2024. Before ranking and the auction, it scans tens of millions of ads and keeps a few thousand strong candidates. Meta reported 6% better recall and 8% better ad quality on selected segments at launch, from a model with 10,000 times more capacity. GEM, the ranking model that came after, lifted ad conversions 5% on Instagram and 3% on Facebook Feed by Meta's own count.

For your account, that means the system reads your creative to decide who sees it. A distinct creative opens a door to a new group of people. A clone knocks on a door that's already open. It's why we argued in June that creative is the new targeting, and the diversity score is the first number Meta has given you to check it.

03 What counts as a different creative?

Meta's own list of what makes creative meaningfully different has six parts: format, visual style, messaging, the persona on screen, the storyline and the talent. In advertiser tests so far, the score reacts to the visual ones. So change what the viewer sees, and change the message along with it.

Likely read as a new creativeLikely grouped with the original
A new format, such as a Reel instead of a static, or a partnership adA rewritten headline on the same image
A different storyline: a founder story instead of a product demoA crop or aspect-ratio change
A different persona on screen, such as new moms instead of Gen Z (Meta's own example)A new color, badge or price overlay
A different creator, filmed somewhere elseThe same creator in the same room with a new first line
A distinct visual style, such as studio shots against phone footageA different CTA button

A fast way to apply it is the squint test. Put the ads side by side at thumbnail size with the sound off. If a stranger couldn't tell two of them apart in a second, count them once. The number you end up with is closer to the number of creatives Meta thinks you have.

04 How to fix a Low creative diversity score

Fix a Low score by adding distinct concepts. Deleting what works is the wrong move: a Low rating on an ad set with a strong winner usually means the winner is surrounded by its own clones. Keep the winner, and brief ideas that look nothing like it.

  1. Add the column and sort by spend. Start with the Low ad sets that spend the most, because that's where clones waste the most money.
  2. Run the squint test on each one and write down the real concept count.
  3. Keep the winner. Pause the clones that haven't earned their spend; they were sharing its learning anyway, so you lose little.
  4. Brief the next batch as a grid: two or three angles crossed with two or three formats, each cell a different person or story. Every cell has to pass the squint test against every other cell.
  5. Give each new concept a fair read on hook rate and cost per purchase before you judge it. The scoring method is in our creative testing system.
  6. Stay well under Meta's cap of 50 ads per ad set. It's a ceiling. We'd take eight distinct concepts over 40 variants of three, every time.

05 Where the score can mislead you

Treat the score as a hint. Meta calls it estimated and in development, and a High rating on an ad set full of weak ideas is still an ad set full of weak ideas. Diversity gets a concept into the auction. Whether it survives testing is a separate question.

It also judges each ad set alone. A retargeting ad set built around one strong offer may rate Low and still earn its keep. A prospecting ad set that rates Low is probably starving its own delivery. Read the score next to cost per purchase and the CPA your margin can afford, which our calculator gives you. If the creative is varied and cost per purchase is still bad, the problem sits past the ad, in the page or the offer. That's the chain we walk through in your ads aren't the problem.

06 Where to start

Switch the column on today and find your highest-spend Low ad sets. Count the real concepts in each. If the honest count is two or three, skip the variants and brief a new person on screen, or a new story. Get it live before the Black Friday auction gets expensive, because every clone costs more that week. If you want us to audit your creative mix against what Meta's delivery rewards, send us the account. How many of your last 20 ads would a stranger call different ads?

FAQ

What is Meta's creative diversity score?

It's a column in Meta Ads Manager that rates each ad set Low, Medium or High on how visually different its images and videos are. Meta labels it estimated and in development. You add it under Columns, then Customize columns. It appeared in accounts in late August 2026 and shows how many distinct creatives Meta thinks you run.

Why is my Meta creative diversity score Low?

Usually because the ads look alike at thumbnail size: one product shot in several crops, one creator in one setting, or one image with several headlines. Meta groups ads with the same main visual and thematic traits and treats them as variations of one creative, so an ad set with many ads can still rate Low.

Does changing the headline create a new creative on Meta?

Not for the diversity score, based on advertiser tests so far. The score reads images and video, so a new headline on the same visual is grouped with the original. Meta does list messaging as one part of creative diversification, so change the visuals and the message together when you want a genuinely new ad.

How many ads should a Meta ad set have in 2026?

Meta allows up to 50 ads per ad set, but that's a ceiling, not a target. What counts is how many distinct concepts you run. A handful of clearly different ads, each given a fair test, usually beats dozens of near-identical variants that Meta groups together and delivers as if they were one.

What is Meta Andromeda?

Andromeda is Meta's ad retrieval engine, described in December 2024. It scans tens of millions of ads and picks a few thousand candidates before ranking and the auction. Meta reported 6% better recall and 8% better ad quality on selected segments. Meta says it moves forward the most relevant and distinct creatives, which is why look-alike ads lose reach.
